Plug Power's Partnerships
On July 14, Plug Power announced it was partnering with Charlottesville, Va.-based Apex Clean Energy in a 345 MW wind power purchase agreement and a development plan to open a green hydrogen production facility. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Shares fell 5% following the announcement.

The power purchased through the PPA will directly supply a new hydrogen production plant with 100% renewable power, the companies said in a statement. The hydrogen plant will be the first and largest wind-supplied hydrogen project in the U.S. and the largest onshore wind-powered project across the globe. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce over 30 metric tons per day of clean liquid hydrogen, enough to fuel the equivalent of over 2,000 light commercial vehicles or over 1,000 heavy duty class 8 trucks.

On June 3, Plug and French carmaker Renault said their Hyvia joint venture to make hydrogen-powered vans was under way. The partnership plans to begin building three types of fuel-cell vans at existing Renault plants in France by the end of this year. The three models will be based on the Renault Master platform of vans and use the same electric motors that now power the all-electric version of the Master.

The project also includes the installation of hydrogen charging stations across Europe, supply of carbon-free hydrogen as well as maintenance and management of fleets.

In April, oilfield supplier Baker Hughes (BHI) joined Plug Power and Chart Industries to establish a private fund that provides capital for large-scale, clean-hydrogen infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, on Feb. 25,  South Korean conglomerate SK Group closed its $1.6 billion investment into a joint venture with Plug Power to expand hydrogen energy in Asia. The joint venture should launch this year.

The partnership will provide hydrogen fuel cell systems, hydrogen fueling stations and electrolyzers to South Korea and other Asian markets.

Plug Power CEO Andy Marsh poses in the production facility in Latham in February 2019.

Expanding Footprint
On June 10, Plug Power announced plans to build a plant in Camden County, Georgia. The plant will produce 15 tons per day of liquid green hydrogen intended to fuel transportation applications, including material handling and fuel cell electric vehicle fleets. Plug Power is investing $84 million in the facility, which is to open in 2022.

On March 30, Plug Power said it planned to open a green hydrogen production plant in south-central Pennsylvania with Brookfield Renewable Partners. PLUG stock jumped 11% on the news. Construction is slated for the first quarter of 2022. The plant is expected to be online by late 2022.

On April 29, Plug Power announced a plan to integrate its ProGen fuel cell engines into BAE Systems' electric buses. The two companies will also work on developing hydrogen and refueling infrastructure to end-customers use points.

Marc J. Leder (co-CEO)
Website www.suncappart.com

Founded by two onetime colleagues at Lehman Brothers, Marc Leder and Rodger R. Krouse, Sun Capital manages billions in private-equity investments, buying and selling companies for profit. The public face of the firm is Leder, a co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team and the New Jersey Devils hockey team. Noted for his extravagant parties and yachting expeditions, he has been dubbed by tabloids as “the Hugh Hefner of the Hamptons.”

Marc Leder, left, and guests attend a 2015 benefit in the Hamptons.

Politically, he may be best known for hosting the Boca Raton, Fla., dinner where presidential candidate Mitt Romney made what became infamous comments about the “47 percent of the people .. who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims.”

Underfounded pensions
Over the past 10 years, Sun Capital has taken five companies into bankruptcy while leaving behind debts of about $280 million owed to employee pensions.

At two of them, Sun Capital took millions of dollars out of the companies while leaving pensions underfunded.

At Powermate, a manufacturer of electric generators with a factory in Nebraska, Sun Capital took $20 million from the company as a dividend in 2006, according to court documents. Two years later, it sent the company into bankruptcy court, leaving the government insurer to pay for the underfunded pension covering 600 workers.

At Indalex, an Illinois-based aluminum parts maker, Sun extracted a dividend of $70 million in 2007, according to court documents. Two years later it sent the company into bankruptcy, leaving the government insurer to pay more than 3,000 pensioners.

At the other two companies, Friendly’s in 2011 and Fluid Routing Solutions in 2009, Sun Capital used the bankruptcy court to shed the pension obligations — and then kept operating. First, Sun put each company into bankruptcy, essentially relinquishing control. In bankruptcy court, the companies were absolved of their pension debts of $115 million and $30 million, respectively. Then, once the companies were pension-free, Sun Capital bought the same companies out of the ensuing bankruptcy auction.

During the period when these five companies filed for bankruptcy with underfunded pensions, Sun had investments in more than 80 companies.

KR monthly (click for live chart)

Americans, Millenials in particular, are demanding more authentic food options preferring fresh and organic to cheap and manufactured. Supermarkets like Whole Foods are becoming more popular and Kroger has already identified this change and is quickly becoming the grocer of choice for consumers who are looking for a more upscale selection.

Kroger continues to expand its Simple Truth natural and organic foods line, which as of late 2015 accounted for $11 billion in revenue. It’s trying to counter intense competition in recent years from Whole Foods Market (WFM), Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM) and others catering to the consumer trend toward fresher, more natural foods.

Whole Foods Market in June 2015 debuted the 365 by Whole Foods Market store concept, which involves smaller, value-oriented stores targeting millennials.

On May 25, Whole Foods opened its latest 365 store, a 28,000-square-foot outlet in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. It plans to open 10 more by the end of 2017. Also last month, Kroger launched My 365, a digital loyalty program that gives customers up to 10% discounts.
