- July 30, 2026: Amazon-owned robotaxi service Zoox has been given the green light from federal regulators to begin charging customers for rides, a first for a company with a purpose-built autonomous vehicle that lacks conventional controls.
- Until now, Zoox has been offering free rides in Las Vegas and San Francisco with its specialized AV, which resembles a toaster on wheels. So far, more than half a million passengers have tested out the robotaxi. Unlike some vehicles from competitors like Waymo or Tesla’s Robotaxi service, Zoox’s robotaxi doesn’t have a steering wheel or brake pedals.

Nvidia-Style Stock Splits Are Mixed Blessing for S&P 500
Nvidia Inc.’s market-beating advance Friday in response to a stock split may be short-lived, based on recent history. The chipmaker climbed 2.6% after its board approved a 4-for-1 split, proposed for July, as the S&P 500 Index declined 0.1%. Nvidia is the 10th current member of the S&P 500 to announce a split since last year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Only four out of the other nine beat the index in the first three months after their declarations -- including Tesla Inc., whose split preceded its S&P 500 selection.

Tesla’s Bitcoin Investment Fails to Bring Coattail Effect
Tesla Inc.’s decline after reporting first-quarter results underscored its inability to ride the coattails of a profitable investment in Bitcoin. Shares of the electric-car maker slid 4.5% Tuesday, while the digital currency rose 3.6%. The contrast in performance is even sharper since Feb. 8, when Tesla disclosed the purchase of $1.5 billion in Bitcoin. From that day through Tuesday, Tesla sank 17% as the currency climbed more than 40%. The company made $101 million in the first quarter from Bitcoin sales. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk tweeted that 10% of its holding was sold.

Tesla nears almost all its peers combined in market value
Could Tesla Inc. be more valuable than 18 other automakers in the U.S., western Europe and Japan combined? From a stock-market perspective, the answer is yes -- almost. The electric-car maker came within $1.3 billion on Monday of exceeding the MSCI World Automobiles Index’s market value after excluding Toyota Motor Corp., according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The gap started the year at $478.3 billion and dwindled as Tesla surged sixfold through Monday. Every other automaker in MSCI’s index fell in the period except Ferrari NV, which rose 10%.

Tesla market value surges past U.S., European auto indexes
Tesla Inc. is more valuable than not only every other automaker, but also entire segments of its industry. The electric-car maker surpassed the market value of the S&P 500 Automobiles and Components Index and the Stoxx Europe 600 Automobiles and Parts Index this year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Tesla’s value as of Tuesday was $304.8 billion, more than triple the total for the S&P 500 industry group and 17% higher than the Stoxx group in dollar terms. While Tesla trails the Topix-17 Automobiles and Transportation Equipment Index, the dollar gap narrowed 65% for the year through Tuesday.

Tesla, electric-vehicle stocks have fully charged quarter
Electric-vehicle makers took off for U.S. stock investors in the second quarter. Tesla Inc. more than doubled, surpassing $1,000 a share for the first time and setting the stage to overtake Toyota Motor Corp. as the world’s most valuable carmaker. Nikola Corp., a truck developer that agreed to go public in March by merging with a blank-check company, advanced 535%. Workhorse Group Inc., a delivery-van company that had less than $100,000 of sales in the previous four quarters, soared 861% for the sharpest gain in the Russell 3000 Index. The company joined the Russell 3000 on Monday after the index’s annual overhaul.

Tesla stock's wild ride prompts valuation expert to sell
Tesla Inc.’s surging share price made a seller out of Aswath Damodaran, a New York University professor and the author of four books on corporate valuation. Damodaran sold a stake in the electric-car maker at $640 a share on Thursday that he bought at $180 last June, according to a post on his Musings on Markets blog. He didn’t disclose the number of shares. Damodaran wrote that the sale followed an analysis that valued Tesla at $427 a share, or 32% less than the price he received. “Tesla’s stock price could continue to go up,” he wrote, though any gains may be tied to momentum rather than valuation.

Tesla has higher value than Ford, GM together after surge
Tesla Inc. became more valuable to U.S. stock investors Tuesday than Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. combined. The electric-car maker’s market value closed at $88.7 billion, surpassing an $86.2 billion total for Ford and GM, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Tesla’s value rose more than 175% through Wednesday from a low in June as the company reported a surprise third-quarter profit and began production from a new Chinese factory. Along the way, Tesla exceeded Ford’s record market value of $80.7 billion in May 1999, along with GM’s post-bankruptcy peak of $66.9 billion in October 2017.
Tesla Inc.’s record-setting stock surge has left Wall Street analysts in the dust. Their average 12-month price projection for the electric-car maker, based on a Bloomberg survey, trailed Tuesday’s close by 34%. Only three of 30 firms to set targets, Argus Research, Jefferies Financial Group Inc. and Oppenheimer & Co., had estimates above the current price -- and all of them were raised within the past week. Tesla also had a lower consensus analyst rating, compiled from buy, hold and sell recommendations, than about 90% of the stocks in the Russell 3000 Index. The consensus included 15 sells, the most of any Russell 3000 company.

Electric cars : Tesla Motors

Global sales of pure electric, hybrid and fuel cell cars topped 110,000 in 2012, according to the International Energy Agency, more than double 2011’s sales but less than 0.2 per cent of overall sales. The US has about 75,000 EVs on its roads, far below the 1m target by 2015 set by President Barack Obama in 2011.
Battery efficiency is improving at about 5 to 8 per cent a year, he says, bringing the technology to the mass market in three to five years. Some mass-market manufacturers have defied the electric naysayers. Nissan’s chief executive Carlos Ghosn in 2007 pledged that the Japanese company would produce the first mass-market electric vehicle. Four years later its Leaf became the world’s biggest-selling electric car.
But with sales of about 26,000 last year, it is still far from a household name: Porsche sold the same number of Carerra 911 sports cars in the same period.
Renault, Europe’s biggest electric car company by sales with 51 per cent of the continent’s zero-emission market, expects its EV sales to double this year to 36,000. “Timing is running on our side. This story will only go in this direction,” says Mr Tavares, his hand shooting upwards. “You are educating your kids, and I am educating my kids and my grandkids in a way that they understand they only have one planet.”

Established carmakers are hampered by their big investment in the internal combustion engine, making it hard to make the leap to a new technology that, in its early stages, appears less promising.
The Zoe, Renault’s compact EV, starts at €21,000 in France. But next to it in the showroom is a petrol-powered Clio, which costs €8,000 less. Insides big car companies, comparisons like this have made it hard to justify ramping up their investment programmes in electric.
Tesla faces no such qualms. “It’s a reality of business that disruptive changes always come from new entrants ... It’s kind of the iPhone moment,” says Mr Jurvetson. “If you’re in the auto industry it’s the most disruptive change you’ve seen in a long time.”
If the Model S turns out to be the forerunner of an electric-powered vehicle with mass appeal, however, the established carmakers will soon be forced to react far more aggressively than they have up to now.
“I believe the Model S will be considered more important than the Model T,” says Mr Jurvetson, displaying the bravado that typifies Tesla. “[It is] a catalyst that will eventually transform all transportation. The true mass market will happen much faster than anyone thinks.”

- Mercedes is launching its first plug-in hybrid-electric midsize sedan, the C350e, in U.S. dealerships in September 2015, according to reports. Chatter on the street suggests that the German auto-making powerhouse plans to deeply undercut Tesla stickers, with a price around $42,000 before $5,250 worth of federal and state incentives. The 85 kWh Tesla starts at twice that level. And the brash young automaker will not have a competitive product until at least 2017. Mercedes can undercut the pricing because it has a lot more experience at mass production and sourcing; will make the car in low-cost Alabama instead of high-cost California; and it can subsidize the vehicle with its other vehicles, just to gain market share. The market for electrics is growing dramatically; this is just the start.

Electric cars: BMW i3
BMW has unveiled its first mass-production electric car, the i3:
The German car maker says the i3 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just over seven seconds and deliver up to 100 miles of driving between charges.
The car has caused a stir because it is battery powered, costs less than some run-of-the-mill BMWs at $41,350 and is said to perform more like a sports car than a golf cart. However, people may wind up talking just as much about an optional on-board gasoline powered generator that extends its range. BMW seems to have borrowed the feature from the Chevrolet Volt.
The i3 also stands out because its main body, called the passenger cell, is made of plastic.
This isn’t ordinary plastic, but carbon fiber reinforced plastic or CFRP, which BMW said is as strong as steel but weighs half as much. The material, which is used in racing cars and a few exotic sports models, also weighs 30% less than aluminum. The i3, which has the space of BMW 3 Series sedan but the smaller footprint of a 1 Series car, weighs about 2,700 pounds, or about the same as a Mini Cooper S.
The car’s structure is part of what BMW calls the “LifeDrive architecture concept” in which the vehicle is formed of a life module, or passenger compartment, and a drive module that contains the electric drive system, rear suspension and energy-absorbing framework for protection in a crash. The drive module is made of aluminum.
The standard i3 has a range of 80 to 100 miles on a charge and can be recharged in three hours with a 220-volt, 32-amp “level 2” charger. Fast charging, which charges the battery in 30 minutes, is available as an option.
To cut down on the range anxiety that keeps some drivers from considering electric cars, BMW is offering a 650cc, 34 horsepower, two-cylinder gas engine that is mounted in the rear of the car and serves as a generator to maintain the battery’s charge and keep the car going for about double its normal electric-only range. This range-extending system adds about 330 pounds to the vehicle, BMW said.
While the optional engine doesn’t drive the car’s wheels, it would change its character to that of a plug-in hybrid, not a pure electric car like a Tesla Model S or Nissan Leaf.
